Schroeder's New Deli
For 30 years Romans young and old have enjoyed lunch and dinner at one location that remains popular no matter what restaurant moves onto Broad Street: Schroeder’s New Deli.
When it opened on Feb. 6, 1981, brothers John and Charles Schroeder weren’t sure how the business would develop, but over time they’ve grown and even franchised their restaurant to two more locations in Armuchee and Calhoun.
But the charm and style of Schroeder’s, with its pressed tin ceilings and artwork hanging on the wall wasn’t always like it is today. Charles Schroeder said it took a lot of work and some wrangling of the banks to make the restaurant what it is today.
“Back when we were remodeling in 1981, we had volunteers coming in to help us build tables, paint, and clean.” Schroeder said. “The $8,500 loan we had back then wouldn’t be enough money today to remodel a restaurant.”
It has been this attitude that has helped make Schroeder’s a success, along with their food.
Featuring everything from pizza and sandwiches to nachos, Schroeder’s typically has something for all tastes. But Schroeder said that three items on the menu continue to be popular with both Romans and out-of-town visitors alike: their Roast Beef Relief, Potato Skins and Fried Mushrooms are big hits no matter the season.
“The potato skins cooked extra crispy are fantastic,” Schroeder said. “If you’ve never had them that way, it would be a whole new experience for you to try them that way.”
Schroeder’s doesn’t just provide a great dining experience for the whole family, but also has room to host parties of all kinds. Schroeder said that he and his brother have hosted everything from wedding rehearsal dinners to graduation parties on their back patio area, which includes a large soon to be covered deck with plenty of seating inside and out.
Schroeder’s is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information about Schroeder’s call 706-234-4613.
